On a Southern Night

And on a Southern night,
When the cloudless sky
Gives birth to a million stars,
And the humid air clings to you
Like a jealous lover,
And the crickets are deafening
With their beautiful serenade,
I long to be nowhere else on earth
But here with you.

Mother Mary

Head bowed gracefully,
Anxious hands quieted by prayer.
The Sacrifices of her son weighing on her mind,
She gives in to the anguish that threatens to stop
The very beating of her heart.
Heavy with grief, she silently weeps.
Peace comes slowly,
Seeping in around the edges
Pushing its way to the center,
Waiting patiently to be discovered there.
Anguish abated briefly,
Soul awash in divine release,
Her heart is momentarily
Relieved of its ever-present burden.
